Talk to your kids about the dangers of gangs: CFSEU

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – In a little over a week, there have been deadly shootings in Maple Ridge and South Surrey and an arrest in the murder of a high-profile gangster.

The BC police squad that keeps an eye on gangs says it’s the perfect opportunity for parents to talk to their kids about the dangers of organized crime.

“As we’ve seen time and time again, unfortunately, we never know when someone involved in this lifestyle is going to be the victim of one of these horrific public shootings,” Sergeant Lindsey Houghton with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSU) tells News1130.

“But you don’t have to wait for these incidents to have these conversations. Every day should be a good day to have these conversations,” he adds.

CFSEU is releasing some information that will help parents have those chats; it includes tips on how to keep your child away from gangs and also signs that they may be running with a bad crowd.

“We felt now was as good a time as any to let people who may not know our story or history [know] about who we are,” says Houghton. “It lets them know what we’re doing what we’re doing around the anti-gang agency and at the same time, educate parents on how to keep the loved ones in their lives safe.”

There were 36 gang related homicides in 2009. That number fell to 18 last year.
