Rash of catalytic converter thefts in Surrey and Langley

SURREY (NEWS1130) – ICBC warns drivers to keep an eye on their cars after a rash of catalytic converter thefts in Surrey and Langley.

It’s a key component on your car and serves to protect the environment. Catalytic converters which reduce toxic emissions are being stolen by thieves.

Adam Grossman with ICBC says there’s been a rash of thefts in Surrey and Langley recently. “Most of the incidents are targeting dealerships where you will find large numbers of vehicles parked outside at night.  It gives a place where thieves can sort of take a lot of these in a short amount of time.”

But some are also being swiped from private driveways. “They’re targeted because they’re fairly easy to remove from the vehicle if you know what you’re doing, and the parts can be sold on for a profit, obviously not legally, and that’s why they’re targeted,” he says.

Although it may be hard to prevent, his advice is to keep a close eye on your car. “For those personal vehicle owners, follow those tips about parking your car in a secure area whenever possible. Certainly, if you have a garage at your home, be sure to use that.”
