VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – With less a week to go before General Election Day, which political party do you think does a better job of handling the finances?
A new UBC study suggests the New Democrats have a slight lead.
The study finds the NDP’s Mike Harcourt controlled debt better than Glen Clark (NDP), Ujjal Dosanjh (NDP), and the two other Liberal premiers.
“On the one side, fiscal management is a function of the premier, not just the party,” says Economist Tsur Sommerville. “On the other side, it shows that the Liberals had more focus on growing the private sector and, in the case of the NDP, it was the public sector.”
However, Sommerville says the explains the Liberals did do well in another area. “The median income of British Columbians rose much more under the Liberals, compared to other provinces.”
“Employment growth was pretty much the same under the NDP and the Liberals,” he adds.
