BlackBerry plans to expand messenger service

ORLANDO, FL. (NEWS1130) – BlackBerry has announced plans to expand its popular BlackBerry Messenger service to Android and iPhone smartphones made by rival companies.

BlackBerry chief executive Thorsten Heins made the announcement after he revealed a new, colourful version of its product aimed at emerging markets.

Heins is confident the time is right for BlackBerry Messenger, also known as BBM, to be available more broadly.

The BlackBerry Q5 announced earlier that this was the company’s third new smartphone this year and will be aimed at emerging markets.

BlackBerry launched the first much-delayed touchscreen and keyboard versions of its 10 smartphones earlier this year.

Heins has said he wants the company to create a portfolio of smartphones that expands beyond the higher priced models into both a mid-priced and entry level version of the device.
