Fake hundred-dollar bills are making the rounds

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Double check the money that’s in your wallet right now.

There have been a couple of cases of counterfeit polymer bills.

Sergeant Diana McDaniel with New Westminster Police says they’re dealing with two cases of fake hundreds. She says this is the first time they’ve seen the new bills being copied. “We do urge them to go to the bank. They’ll be able to tell them if it’s counterfeit. If they did want to come to the police, they could do that as well.”

McDaniel says the bills look legit, but you’ll be able to tell if you’re holding a fake by looking at the hologram. “The numbers 100, the rooftop and the flag are clearly visible on the genuine bill. On the counterfeit bill, inside the transparent strip the numbers 100 and the rooftop and flag are clearly not present.”

McDaniel says criminals are getting more sophisticated because serial numbers are also being repeated.
