Christy Clark loses in Vancouver-Point Grey

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It was one of the closest races in this provincial election; NDP candidate David Eby has defeated Liberal leader Christy Clark in the Vancouver-Point Grey riding by only 785 votes.

The two were neck-and-neck throughout most of the night, as Eby supporters watched the results come down at Nuba restaurant on West Broadway.

Although Eby felt confident the entire time, he acknowledged early in the evening how tight of a race it would be.

“We’ve seen almost twice as many people vote as voted in the by-election in the advance poll, and the response from the community has been great. I’m feeling pretty good. It’s definitely going to be close, but I think we’ve got a shot at it.”

He credits environmental policies and his strong outreach in the riding for the victory.

“This is a very environmentally-minded riding, very concerned about the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project and the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion that would increase tanker traffic off our local beaches. Secondly, I think it’s a message about the kind of representative the community wants, someone who lives in the riding, and will fight for this community.”

Eby thinks he ran a better campaign than the one during the 2011 by-election where he lost to Clark by a mere 564 votes. He thinks getting supporters to vote early was also a big help.
