Is a free food forest possible in Vancouver?

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A Vancouver city councillor says a free food forest similar to what’s being developed in Seattle, is a possibility here.

“We don’t want to focus on food bearing to the detriment of things like shade, water use, habitat and practical considerations around safety, damage to property, you want to think all that through before you say we’ll put in a food forest whether or not it makes sense,” says Councillor Andrea Reimer.

She says it would be part of the city’s Forest Management Plan.

“We have to look at what needs to take place between now and 2020 in order to make it happen,” says Councillor Andrea Reimer.

The Beacon Food Forest in Seattle will be seven acres filled with fruits, nuts and berries. The food will be free for anyone to take and the public land is situated about 3KM from downtown.
