Extradition hearing begins in alleged honour killing

By

VANCOUVER (News1130) – An extradition hearing has started in BC Supreme Court for a mother and uncle accused of helping to plan an honour killing.

Jassi Sidhu’s body was found in a canal in India 13 years ago after she ran away to be with a husband her parents didn’t approve of.

Sidhu’s friend Jody Wright says she was deeply in love and planning to bring her husband home.

Wright says her family forced her to admit the secret marriage and then locked her in a room.

An RCMP officer has testified Sidhu walked into a detachment in the spring of 2000 and told officers she had just married against her family’s wishes and feared for her safety and her husband’s, but was told there wasn’t much police could do.

Forty-five minutes later she walked out of the detachment with a phone number for the Indian consulate, despite repeated calls in the past from her and others about her situation.

Sidhu’s uncle Surjit Badesha and mother Malkit are wanted in India for conspiracy to commit murder.
