Businesses reject dedicated bike lanes on Point Grey Road

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It looks like businesses and bikes don’t mix, at least on Vancouver’s Point Grey Road.
Six out of 10 Kitsilano Chamber of Commerce members have rejected a proposal to close the route to commuters in favour of dedicated bike lanes.
But Executive Director Cheryl Ziola points out not everyone is against it. “There are 33 per cent of our members who support the closure of Point Grey Road to all vehicle commuter traffic. One of them cited a New York Times article showing 33 per cent increase in business for businesses along a bike route.”
“Perhaps the city needs to widen the consultation and consider some of the other proposals. One of our members also suggests to widen the sidewalk on one side to accommodate cyclists only, with pedestrians on the other side,” she adds.
The survey of the chamber’s 600 members was conducted over the past week with final results headed to city staff.
