Another push to stop coal port expansion

By

DELTA (NEWS1130) – It’s a last minute push to stop a coal port expansion at Fraser Surrey Docks before a meeting with Metro Vancouver; the Burns Bog Society put on a forum at the Delta Golf Course last night to discuss the dangers of having extra trains carrying coal in the region. Roughly 120 people heard from a panel of experts including environmentalists and a doctor.

The plan to increase American trains carrying coal for shipment out of Fraser Surrey Docks en route to Asia has some folks living near the wetlands fearing the worst.

“The environment, the world, the future… at what point do we stop and re-evaluate and say we can’t do this anymore?” wonders Blake, a Delta resident who’s hoping to protect the wetlands.

Others feel it’s not just the environment that will be impacted.

“I’m worried about the future generation breathing in the coal dust that’s going to come right through, and I also live on this side of Burns Bog,” explains Aileen.

“The coal dust and the gases it gives off are going to cause a major public health disaster over the next 20 years,” adds Jane.

Those opposed say timing is critical, with Metro Vancouver set to hold a full hearing on Friday. Coal advocates are urging people to reach out to politicians now before it is too late.
