DELTA (NEWS1130) – The debate about coal expansion is leading to some frustration over the role of Port Metro Vancouver. There’s a call for more meaningful public consultations.
Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington wants hearings into coal expansion; she’s calling on Ottawa to step in, suggesting the port has gone rogue.
“They have too much power, too much independence, and they simply have to be reigned in,” she argues.
The port insists its mandate is to facilitate trade and it can’t address some of the larger environmental issues. Huntington disagrees.
“They have perhaps the largest impact of any single authority or company in the Lower Mainland,” she maintains.
For starters, Huntington wants health studies on the impact of coal exports.
