Abbotsford Police accused of mistreating the homeless

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – The Abbotsford Police Department has now found itself pulled into accusations that homeless people there have been mistreated by those in power.

Constable Ian MacDonald says the allegations came up during a meeting with Abbotsford’s Social Development Advisory Committee.  Those meetings were launched amid outrage after city crews dumped chicken manure on a site where the homeless often camp.

“A very reputable advocacy group brought to the forefront, some allegations that Abbotsford police officers had been involved in damaging tents belonging to homeless persons and deploying pepper spray in and around the area.”

MacDonald says because of the group’s credibility, the department’s chief has now called in the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner to investigate.

“I think that this is really us attempting to be transparent and to let the public know that allegations have been forwarded and that we’ve taken some proactive steps to investigate.”

He says the accusations have the APD very concerned and adds, anyone who feels they’ve been mistreated by police should raise their concerns right away.
