Cyclists hop on their bikes for BC Superweek

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – BC Superweek is underway!

Cyclists from all over North America are here to race in five events across Metro Vancouver, including the Tour de Gastown.

Many local athletes travel all over the world to race, including Gillian Carleton who has been in Europe for the last two months.

“To come home and race in front of the home crowd and see the support we’ve had out, like at the Tour de Delta road race yesterday, just the people on the side of the road, the fans, it was absolutely phenominal,” she says.superweek3

“It’s kind of where it starts,” adds Zach Bell, the 2013 Canadian Road Race Champion.  “I think for a lot of guys in the room this is where we learn how to race bikes, and then where we learn how to win bike races.”

Yesterday’s Tour de Delta was the first BC Superweek event.  The next race is the UBC Grand Prix, which happens tomorrow.

The Tour de Gastown goes on Wednesday followed by the Giro di Burnaby on Thursday.

The three-day Tour de Whiterock begins on Friday.

Organizers say each event attracts between 5,000 and 30,000 spectators, and more than $100,000 in prize money is available for competitive riders.
