May be months before Bountiful charges possible

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The special prosecutor appointed in the Bountiful case will have a mountain of files to sift through before we find out whether any sex or polygamy charges will be laid in the case.

The RCMP handed over a report to Peter Wilson last week and it’s expected more material will be given to Wilson in the coming months.

“It will likely be a number of months before a charge assessment decision will be announced, although we can’t at this time provide a specific timeline for this process,” Neil Mackenzie with the Crown tells News1130.

“There is a substantial amount of material that has been provided to Mr. Wilson.  I can’t go into the specifics of the contents of the report.  Mr. Wilson’s mandate includes considering if the evidence supports the prosecution of the sexual exploitation and other alleged offences against minors by individuals associated with the community of Bountiful from the early 1980s to the present.”

The special prosecutor’s original mandate didn’t include possible polygamy charges, but Wilson’s responsibilities were expanded after a BC Supreme Court decision upheld Canada’s ban on polygamy.
