Coquitlam realtor sexually assaulted during open house

COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – Coquitlam RCMP have released a composite sketch of a man who reportedly sexually assaulted a real estate agent during an open house in May.

The realtor was in the home by herself at the time of the attack and she was not injured.

“It is a scary experience but she was able to convince him to leave the house and she closed the door after,” says Cpl. Jamie Chung.

The man is described as an Asian man in his 30s with dark hair and eyes.  At the time, he was wearing a t-shirt, jeans and running shoes.

The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver says it’s getting a steady stream of calls after news broke on the recent sexual assault of a realtor.

Board president Sandra Wyant says there are a ton of safety recommendations they have for both men and women in the industry.

“We always tell them to make sure they never go anywhere without telling someone where they are going. To make sure they always have their cell phones with them. We even go down to some things as basic as when you are showing a property, don’t walk into a room ahead of your client, walk behind them. Don’t go into attic spaces, don’t go into crawl spaces.”

She also recommends the buddy system.

“We recommend buddying up for open houses at a very minimum. Certainly don’t do open houses at vacant properties without calling in to someone before and after. If you are going to do open houses…even in new subdivisions, a group of you should do them.”

Thankfully she says this type of thing is quite rare.

If you have any information on this attack you are asked to call Coquitlam RCMP at 604.945.1550 or Crime Stoppers.
