MLA wants human rights protection for transgender people

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As we head into a pride weekend, there’s a new call for the provincial government to amend the Human Rights Code.

Spencer Chandra Herbert is pushing for transgender-gender British Columbians to be finally recognized.

“Transgender British Columbians face incredible rates of violence, discrimination in employment, housing and are deserving of the same human right you and I enjoy.”

Chandra Herbert has twice moved a private members bill which was not supported by the Liberals. “We have a new attorney general, Suzanne Anton, and I’m hoping she will take a fresh look at this and decide to act.”

He says this protection already exists in several provinces including Ontario and Manitoba.

“I think none of us support discrimination and we all support equality and I think that right, that explicit right, should be extended to a small percentage of British Columbians.”
