CBSA warning about car scam south of the border

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Canada Border Services Agency is warning you about a scam involving buying cars and bringing them into Canada from the US.

The scam involves a person claiming to be a salesperson for a luxury car dealership in Utah. That person tries to convince Canadian shoppers to pay for a vehicle online or over the phone.

The victims are then sent phony emails with a CBSA letterhead, which say the border agency needs to see an advance bill of sale or receipt before the vehicle can be brought into Canada.

Two people from Calgary lost over $130,000 in the scam.

The CBSA says it would never ask you for advance documentation.

“That is not the requirement at all, the CBSA requires importers to provide a title and bill of sale at the time they bring the vehicle into Canada so we never require verification for purchases in advance by phone or by email either,” says Lisa White with the agency.
