Teen and suspect in California Amber Alert spotted: reports

IDAHO (NEWS1130) – The missing California teen at the centre of a multi-state Amber Alert and her suspected kidnapper have apparently been spotted by horseback riders in Idaho.

Suspect James DiMaggio’s car has also been found in a remote area of Frank Church River in that state.

“About five or six miles from where the car was discovered is where they were spotted with their backpacks and the tent,” says San Diego County Sheriff William Gore.

The horseback riders have reported meeting up with DiMaggio and 16-year-old Hannah Anderson on Wednesday and told police they appeared to be “in good health” and unharmed.

The group thought it seemed suspicious though. “They did seem to think the two of them were out of place in that area with the light camping equipment they had in very rugged terrain. They thought it was just unique that they ran across them up there. So when they came back they made some inquiry and found out about the Amber Alert.”

“Vehicles are not really practical in this wilderness terrain that they’ve been located in, so it’s either hiking or horseback.”

San Diego County sheriffs believe DiMaggio planned the kidnapping and there was preparation involved. They say the suspect recently purchased tents and backpacks.

Teams are stationed at numerous access points around the forested area but at this time their location isn’t known.

Police from California to BC have been looking for them since the bodies of Hannah’s mom and an unidentified child were found Sunday at DiMaggio’s burned home east of San Diego.
