Luongo breaks his silence in Cowtown

CALGARY, AB (NEWS1130) – Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo was front and centre at the first day of the Canadian men’s Olympic hockey team orientation camp. Lou said he was happy to be playing and being a starter.

Speaking to a group of reporters for the first time since ex-Canucks number one goaltender Cory Schneider was traded at the NHL draft in New Jersey at the end of July, the Canucks goalie was asked if he was going to be happy in Vancouver this season.

“I’m happy to be playing and being a starter. I think that’s what matters the most right now. That’s what I am focused on. So, at the end of the day, that’s all you really need, right.”

Luongo is the incumbent goaltender, with a gold medal from 2010 at Canada Hockey Place. Team Canada general manager Steve Yzerman says the goaltending battle is wide open for this country.

Luongo is on board with Stevie Y.

“It’s an open competition and whoever plays best, deserves to be the starter. That’s the way I see it. You work hard and want to be rewarded for your efforts. If I am going to be there, I want to deserve it.”

The goalies will be evaluated on their play during the regular season, as there are no on-ice sessions in Calgary because of high insurance costs.

The other goaltenders at the Canadian camp are Carey Price of Anahim Lake and Montreal, Mike Smith of the Coyotes, Stanley Cup champion Corey Crawford of the Blackhawks and Braden Holtby of the Capitals.
