Cyclist killed in Richmond; RCMP say it was a hit and run

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – Mounties are crediting a key piece of evidence with helping them locate a suspected hit and run driver early this morning.

A 64-year-old cyclist died after being struck just before 3:30 a.m.

Police were called to No. 5 Road just north of Highway 91 and found the badly-injured man and his bike, which was heavily damaged.

Despite what police say was a significant amount of debris left on the road, the driver was nowhere to be seen. But after sorting through the debris, Corporal Stephanie Ashton says they quickly found a license plate.

“They were able to track the suspect vehicle and driver through that licence plate. [We] attended his residence and he appeared shortly after their arrival. They also located the vehicle and seized the vehicle.”

Ashton says the neighbourhood is notorious for speeders.

“[Police are] here about twice a month. They’re seeing people driving at speeds over 80 kilometres an hour and they’ve had numerous complaints about the crosswalk that people are not stopping for people in the crosswalk.”

The speed limit is 50 kilometres an hour.

Parmjeet, who did not want to give her last name, lives a block away from where the crash happened and also says accidents are common in the area.

“[They go] very fast… maybe 80, 90 kilometres. [The speed limit is] only 50. All these people drive crazy. Every… maybe two months, there’s an accident. sometimes [involving] a bike.”

A 24-year-old man is in custody.
