BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Pitbull lovers are making their case as the city of Burnaby considers getting tougher on the breed.
The group HugABull is trying to get as many people as possible to speak up against a plan to update a vicious dogs bylaw.
The new version would continue to consider all pitbulls vicious, and would hike fines and fees for owners.
HugABull’s April Fahr says she’s not optimistic.
“In other communities we’ve worked with, we’ve just found council to be a lot more receptive to discussion, and Burnaby really, it’s felt a little dismissive. It’s taken 15 months to even get a staff report.”
Despite that, she’s hoping council will hear from them loud and clear. “They are accepting letters and emails and public feedback until September 20th, which doesn’t give us a lot of time. So we have a very co-ordinated effort encouraging everybody to write to the city council.”
The city considers pitbulls to be the top biting breed in Burnaby.
