Blackberry Messenger launching on Android, iPhone

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A feature that people loyal to Blackberry have been asking for is on it’s way this weekend.

Blackberry Messenger (BBM) will be available on Android and iPhone. This opens the door for people on all of the major smartphone platforms to send messages back and forth.

Local tech journalist Akash Sablok tells us it’s something Blackberry is hoping will help them turn things around.

“Putting this out there, expanding the user base, and of course, giving BBM options to people that now can communicate with people outside the Blackberry… will hopefully have people retain their Blackberry.”

“I’ve done a rough survey that people do really this app to be able to communicate with users of other devices. This allows them to hold on to their BBM,” he adds.

One of the big selling points of the cross-platform BBM is group chats, with up to 30 contacts.

But while people who own a Blackberry can send photos and video, that’s a feature that won’t come to Android and iPhone until later on.
