Another push for road tolls to help pay for transit

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A conference devoted to tolling is happening this week in Vancouver featuring several international experts.

“We would like to encourage governments to consider tolling when they need to expand for rehabilitate their road, bridge, or tunnel infrastructure,” explains Patrick Jones, CEO of the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association.

Jones says people living in Metro Vancouver experience far less tolling when comparing to other major cities such as Washington D.C., New York, and San Fransisco.

“In some other cities like San Fransisco and New York, with a mix of traffic between automobiles, busses and trains and transit, those cities recognize that they are serving a regional transit need.”

Jones believes if you use the infrastructure, you should pay for it.

The TransLink mayors council and the province have been at a stand still when it comes to a method to fund transit moving forward. Road tolling has been one of the top options.
