Relief on the way for air travellers fed up with liquid bans

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Machines able to detect liquid explosives may bring an end to restrictions brought in in 2006 after a transatlantic terror plot to blow up airplanes.

In January, the technology will be set up in airports across Canada, the US, Europe, and Australia.  They’ll be able to tell whether any liquid could be transformed into an explosive device.

News1130 spoke with passengers at YVR to find out what this will mean for them.

“It’s inconvenient if you’re traveling to a connecting airport and want to access something so this is good,” says one traveller.

“I have to make sure that in my bag I don’t have any lotion or any of the little bottles now you know,” explains another.

“I’m a contact lens wearer so I think it has been a bit of a hassle but just having to move things into smaller bottles, and it also makes you carry less,” says one woman.

If the technology works, restrictions on passengers carrying liquids, aerosols and gels in carry-on luggage could be rolled back by 2016.
