VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Port Coquitlam teenager Amanda Todd’s suicide one year ago had a profound effect on people internationally, including child music star Raff Cavoukian.

The iconic singer held a live reading for his new book, #LightwebDarkweb at the Central Vancouver Public Library Wednesday night, which he dedicated to Todd.

The term Darkweb loosely refers to the dangers kids can find when left unsupervised on the internet and especially social media.

Raffi says he was shocked by the teenager’s suicide and is calling for critical changes to social media.

Todd was a cyber-bullying victim which caused her to take her own life.

Raffi also advocated user verification for things like Facebook so that predators can’t hide under what he calls “a cloak of invisibility.”

Most of his life-long fans are happy to see him take a step back from entertaining to tackle the issue.

“It touched me deeply. Not only is he a children’s entertainer, he cares deeply for children,” says one woman at the reading, who has been listening to him since her childhood.

“With all the technology right now, it’s really harming them. They will have social problems because they’re always on the internet all the time,” says another.
