Union questions need for cameras in school buses

By

LANGLEY (NEWS1130) – The union for school bus drivers in Langley is questioning a plan to put video cameras aboard the entire fleet.  The school district is gathering proposals to set up the surveillance by the New Year.

Among the reasons the district is considering the cameras is to help correct bus drivers.  CUPE local 1260 President Donna Mason wants to know why the school district thinks surveillance is needed.

“I don’t know what the motivation is behind that,” she says.  “We have, from my understanding, a very good safety record in the Langley School District with the bus drivers.”

The proposal has also raised concerns with civil liberty advocates who think it violates privacy rights.  The district insists the installation is not a done deal.
