Senate to vote on suspension motion today

By

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – After nine days of debate, the Senate will finally vote today on a motion that would suspend Senators Mike Duffy, Pamela Wallin and Patrick Brazeau without pay.

The suspensions would strip the three of their pay, privileges, and Senate resources for the rest of the parliamentary session, which could last another two years.

If the motions do pass, the embattled trio will still be able to keep their health benefits and life insurance.

The debates ended in a dramatic session with Sen. Brazeau making a late-night passionate plea to his colleagues. Calling the process a “shameless farce” and a “gong show,” Brazeau aggressively claimed his innocence.

Brazeau said the Deloitte audit proves he didn’t break the rule, but the government still targeted him.

“For political purposes, expediency, let’s thrown them under the bus. Well, you’re not going to throw this Indian under the bus,” he said

Brazeau choked up as he sent a message to his children in what could be his last speech in the upper chamber. “You’re too young to understand what is going on here. I am much older than you and I barely understand.”

Sen. Duffy wasn’t present at the debate, while Sen. Wallin didn’t speak.

Several Conservatives stood up to defend these three saying they haven’t received a fair hearing and we need to wait for the police investigation to wrap up. However, other Tories argue if any other Canadian made improper claims like this they’d be fired immediately.
