Victoria Police say “Balaclava Rapist” back in custody

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – Police in Victoria say a 61-year-old man who sexually assaulted women in Alberta decades ago is now back in custody after living in a half-way house.
Larry Takahashi who is known as the so-called “Balaclava Rapist” was the subject of a public notification by Victoria police in October.
The department announced at the time he posed a significant risk of harm to adult and teenage girls.
The police say on their Facebook page he has now returned to a Correctional Service Canada facility, but agency spokesman Jean-Paul Lorieau says the Privacy Act prevents him from saying anything beyond confirming Takahashi is under its jurisdiction.
Takahashi was convicted in 1984 of 14 counts of rape and sexual assault between 1979 and 1983 and was sentenced to three concurrent life sentences.
He wore a balaclava to hide his face during attacks in Edmonton highrise apartments, but a fingerprint discovered on an unscrewed light bulb at one attack scene led to his arrest.
