No new money will mean making tough decisions: Fassbender

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – BC’s education minister has challenged school boards to make tough decisions, saying there’s no new money right now.

“Now, am I advocating closing schools? No I am not. Am I advocating that boards may be have to make that decision? Absolutely.”

Peter Fassbender was blunt in his address to trustees, telling them they also should not expect help to cover BC Hydro rate hikes.

“There will be no special rates for school districts. There also will be no special rates for hospital districts, for seniors care facilities or for me living in my home or you living in your home.”

Vancouver School Board Chair Patti Bacchus was among those who challenged him, pointing to the Olympics, BC Place and the Convention Centre as projects that have received government support.

“We have priorities. I, as a school trustee, can’t think of anything more important to invest in than our kids.”

Fassbender says the province won’t shy away from building its economic future.
