VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A new analysis of the wealthiest people in Canada puts Jim Pattison at the top of the list.
The Bloomberg Billionaires Index says his private empire, which includes Save-On-Foods, car dealerships and an outdoor advertising company, is worth $9.5 billion. That’s $2.1 billion more than recently estimated by Canadian Business magazine, which ranks Pattison fifth.
For his part, Pattison tells Bloomberg, “I haven’t done the numbers, so I really don’t know. I don’t pay attention to that.”
The other reason Pattison rockets to the top of the Bloomberg list is new information about the Thompson family that has long held the number-one spot.
Bloomberg says David KR Thomson owns less of his family’s investment company than previously reported. The report says his father split stakes in the firm among several descendants, including David Thomson’s cousin Sherry Brydson, who is worth $6.5 billion and is now ranked as the richest woman in Canada. Bloomberg identifies her as one of six members of the Thomson family, five of them women, who have never appeared on an international wealth ranking.
