Hockey mom attacked at Newton Arena dies of injuries

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Homicide investigators say the 53-year-old who was attacked in the parking lot of Newton Arena has died.

She was found unconscious on Sunday night.

The victim has been identified as 53-year-old Julie Paskall of Surrey; she was picking up her son, who was refereeing a game, at the time of the attack.

Homicide investigators say it was an unprovoked attack.

“Exactly how she was attacked and what happened just briefly prior to that… that’s part of what we’re trying to find out,” explains Sergeant Adam MacIntosh with IHIT.

He tells us the motive still appears to be robbery but they don’t have a suspect. “I can’t emphasize enough how much we would encourage anyone in the community with information [to call]. Somebody knows who did this; somebody has information. We want them to come forward and help us resolve this.”

MacIntosh notes they still believe this attack could be related to one that happened on December 16th in the same area.

This is Surrey’s 25th homicide of the year. The previous record-high homicide rate in that city was 21, set in 2005.

The MLA for Surrey-Newton says he’s met with the city’s police chief because this latest homicide has created a surge of fear in the community. A task force has been created but the NDP’s Harry Bains says people are looking for immediate answers and action.

“People don’t want to walk around in certain areas because of fear of their safety. So, we want to raise this with the [police] chief. Hopefully, they could step it up,” he says.

Bains adds Mounties have told him they’re doing all they can with the resources they have.
