BC’s economy is lagging: NDP

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The provincial New Democrats are taking aim at the Liberals’ economic record. The Opposition says the stats don’t paint a very good picture.

The NDP argues the province is lagging on a number of fronts, including coming in ninth in private sector job growth in the last couple of years and having the highest unemployment rate in western Canada.

It also points to BC having the highest child poverty rate in the country.

New Democrat Leader Adrian Dix claims these are all indicators that show the government is failing. “An economic plan that’s essentially a communications plan for the premier is not the economic plan we need in British Columbia.”

Dix says the government’s plan seems to be focused on one thing: LNG.

For its part, the BC government says it’s concentrating efforts on economic fundamentals and balancing the budget.

Jobs Minister Shirley Bond says the overall economic picture remains strong and job creation remains the government’s top priority.

She says job gains in the private sector coupled with the highest business confidence numbers in Canada point to the tremendous economic opportunities ahead in the province.
