Local bars still boycotting Russian booze

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Some local bars are still refusing to serve Russian alcohol in protest of anti-LGBTQ laws in that country; that will continue throughout Sochi 2014.

Fountainhead Pub Manager Drew Watling says over the last few months, customers have been very supportive.

“People will come in and ask for a certain brand, we don’t have it and all of our staff are fully aware of why we’re not doing it and why we’re not serving Russian products. It’s basically to get those conversations started and to get people talking about what’s happening over there.”

But Watling says they will be airing the Olympic Games on their screens. “We may not necessarily support what’s happening in Russia but we can definitely support the athletes and all their hard work and training.”

In order to show their support for the LGBTQ community in Russia, the pub is sending some notes of encouragement.

“It’s one small little thing but it just shows them that there are people in Canada that are caring and considering them,” he adds.
