Construction of Point Grey bike lane closes major road

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A major road through Kitsilano is now closed for the construction of a new bike lane along Point Grey Road.

Point Grey Road between Macdonald and Alma has been shut down permanently and it is creating a lot of controversy.

Many against the $6-million closure say it’s the same as creating a park for the rich.

Cheryl Ziola with the Kitsilano Chamber of Commerce says they are still waiting for concrete data from the city that shows diverting 10,000 cars a day won’t hurt local businesses. “Since the city council decided to close the road back in the summer, in November Vancouver was found to be the most congested city in North America. So how does the city address that? They close a major road and they provide no viable alternative mode of transport, such as a Broadway subway line.”

She says they are closely following the lawsuit over the proposed bike lane through Kits Park to see if there’s a legal precedent for them to follow. “If they are successful, if there’s a precedent, we will definitely be looking at whether any of the parks along Point Grey Road would have similar restrictive covenants. We’re talking with a few legal experts and we’re hoping to get more information on that shortly.”
