Canada to win more medals in Sochi: Data group

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The countdown is on to the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.  The Games get underway exactly two weeks from today and while issues over security are getting a lot of attention, fans hope Team Canada will be able to out-do our record medal haul here in Vancouver.

Whatever happens people we talked to on the streets of Vancouver this morning seemed pumped.

“I’m a sports nut; I’m looking forward to all of them.  I don’t think it will be as exciting as it was in Vancouver because it’s further away and less obvious,” says Frank.

Own The Podium says the goal is to surpass our incredible medal count from 2010.  Back then, Team Canada won 26 medals, including a record-number of gold at 14 which was the most ever at a Winter Games.

One of the highlights of the Olympics in Vancouver was the golden goal scored by Sidney Crosby that helped Canada beat the US in men’s hockey.

“Playing for Team Canada, playing in the Olympics is a great opportunity but being able to be named captain I think is definitely an honour,” says Crosby.

But can he do it again?  International sports data group InfoStrata doesn’t think he will.  As for our medal count in Sochi, InfoStrata predicts 11 gold, but a total of 31 medals.
