Outdoor buffs say naming peak after Tim Jones ‘fitting’

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The day before people in the search and rescue community pay tribute to Tim Jones, some are suggesting naming a local peak after him.

Jones collapsed and died on Mt. Seymour last weekend, after a social event.

ClubTread, which is a chatroom for local outdoor enthusiasts, is full of tributes and people supporting the idea of a peak named after Jones.

Guy Black says there’s a good chance a crusade to have a Mt. Seymour peak named after the former North Shore Rescue leader would succeed.

Black, who lives in Port Moody, has led six campaigns to have local natural landmarks named after notable figures. Through that work, he got to know Jones, who had an intimate knowledge of the North Shore.

“He has totally earned it. It’s a lasting way of remembering someone,” says Black.

He points out GeoBC, the government branch that is in charge of names, would likely favour the new name.

“He’s a hero. Besides knowing who is he is and his reputation, he also has the Order of BC.”

Black points out landmarks can only be named after someone two years after their death and must not already have a First Nations name.
