Building Canada Fund projects remain a mystery

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Municipal and provincial politicians will be listening carefully for any movement on the Building Canada Fund as the winter Parliament session gets underway Monday. But the only thing Ottawa is saying about the program set to begin April 1st is an announcement is coming soon.
$14-billion is earmarked for per-capita infrastructure funding to be used on infrastructure projects like highways and public transit. President of the Treasury Board Tony Clement says there’s a process in place with different levels of funds, but didn’t say what projects will be considered.

However, Clement adds “because British Columbia is a gateway to Asia for Canada obviously that’s an area we’re very interested in establishing more robust transportation and other linkages in our gateways. ”

Municipal leaders have expressed concern about losing out on funding for upcoming projects because they’re confused about how to access funds.

“There’s going to be a whole process, and there will be different levels of funds, too,” Clement assures.

Clement says Ottawa has been working closely with institutions like the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to make sure projects address local needs but stay accountable to taxpayers.

The program will span ten years. No word on when the announcement will be made.
