Will the groundhog see his shadow on Sunday?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Are the West Coast marmots, moles and groundhogs going to be frightened back into their holes on Sunday morning?

Folklore has it that if a groundhog sees his shadow he’ll flee to his burrow, heralding six more weeks of winter, and if he doesn’t, it means spring’s around the corner.

Instead of waiting until Sunday to find out, we thought we would check in with our human meteorologist, Russ Lacate.

“Seeing as how more clouds will form on Sunday, I’m wondering if our west-coast varmint might not see their shadows at all,” he tells us.

“That would be alright if spring arrived early; too bad our forecast doesn’t reflect that because we’ve got an outbreak of Arctic air arriving for most of next week,” notes Lacate.

Spring officially begins March 20th.
