Vancouver councillor’s gay rights ideas well-received by IOC

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A Vancouver city councillor is feeling positive after speaking with some high-ranking members of the International Olympic Committee while in Sochi.

Tim Stevenson brought up gay rights during a meeting that lasted more than an hour.

He has been in Sochi for three days, and the openly-gay city councillor has now met with the head of the IOC president’s executive office, as well as the group’s communications director.

“I hadn’t expected it would go as well,” he admits.

Stevenson says there’s been a lot of talk about renewal within the organization. “I came away with kind of a sense of this new president is somewhat like the new pope, who wants to go in a new direction and the new pope, of course, has to bring along his cardinals and bishops.”

Stevenson wants sexual orientation included in the Olympic charter as well as pride houses in each host city. He says both ideas were greeted positively at his meeting.
