Dial back on ‘snowmaggedon’ panic a bit: Russ Lacate

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Keep the shovel handy, but don’t bother bracing for “snowmaggedon” just yet.

Environment Canada had issued a warning about a potentially nasty snowstorm for this Family Day long weekend but News1130 Meteorologist Russ Lacate says it should come with a caveat.

“I’m not disagreeing with the likelihood of snowfall for early next week; in fact, I’ve been talking about that possibility for a few days already. But there are way too many uncertainties in the equation to be advertising a snowfall warning five days in advance.”

“It’s unknown how fast the Arctic air is going to retreat or how much moisture is in this incoming jetstream. There might not even be enough to trigger significant precipitation because it’s over-running and incredibly dry Arctic air mass,” he explains.

“Do I think it’s going to snow Monday? I do. But there are too many unknown factors at play to be calling it a long weekend snowstorm at this point,” says Russ.

“Stay tuned; we’ll watch the situation as it unfolds and keep you in the loop!”

You definitely want to bundle up today, though!

We’ve already set a record at YVR for the lowest temperature recorded on February 6th. The mercury dipped down to -8.3 at the airport earlier this morning.
