Avalanche closes Coquihalla overnight

HOPE (NEWS1130) – If your travel plans include a trip across the Coquihalla, think again.

A naturally occurring avalanche has come down near the Summit and the highway is closed in both directions between Hope and Merritt.

Bob Gilowski with VSA Maintenance says they’ve been dealing with a massive dumping of snow. “We’ve got over 200 cms of snow in just over a week’s time on the Coquihalla Summit.”

He says the avalanche is two to four feet in depth.

Gilowski says no one was hurt in the avalanche.

The Ministry of Transportation adds that a driver did try to go through the debris, got stuck, but is now safe.

Drive BC says the highway will remain closed overnight. The estimated time of reopening is between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
