Fire destroys a dozen boats in La Conner, Wash. marina

LA CONNER, WASH. (NEWS1130) – About a dozen boats have been destroyed at a marina at La Conner, Washington.

The fire began in one of the boats late Friday afternoon.

Dave Franklin, who manages the Shelter Bay Community, which includes the marina, says fortunately that boat was on an outlying dock.

“Most of the boats at that dock were fully involved. Most of them were fibreglass, or fibreglass superstructures. It was a pretty intense blaze. Docks being what they are, we put them close together.”

Unfortunately, one of the other boats that caught fire then drifted into another dock, spreading the blaze.

Franklin says considering some very expensive vessels were damaged, he calls the loss “substantial.”

He isn’t sure how the first fire started. “At this time of year, people like to keep their boats warm. Somebody may have had a heater on. It’s hard to say.”

A fire boat, pump trucks and volunteer firefighters were able to put out the fire about two hours after it started.

The marina is about a mile from the town of La Conner.
