Proposed subway to UBC is of national significance: mayor

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Broadway corridor may be the busiest and most over-crowded transit route in Canada, but is building a subway out to UBC a project of national importance?
That’s the pitch Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson is making in Ottawa, where he is chairing a meeting of the country’s big-city mayors.
The mayors are all after a piece of the federal government’s $14-billion, 10-year infrastructure fund but Roberson has said it isn’t enough to meet the needs across the country, including any federal dollars that would come for a new rapid transit line to UBC.
That is why Robertson has his sights set on another $4 billion set aside for projects of “national significance.”
Robertson is arguing a subway to UBC would have a national economic impact, telling the Vancouver Sun it would help Vancouver become a global research hub, linking UBC to major health science facilities like VGH, the BC Cancer Agency and the Centre for Disease Control.
Robertson claims more international companies will locate in Vancouver if there is better “connectivity” in the city.
