If repairable, Bailey Bridge could reopen within a month

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS1130) – The future of the Bailey Bridge connecting United Boulevard to Braid Street is still uncertain, but if repaired, could be back up and running within a month.

New Westminster Councilor Jonathan Cote says the city is finishing the final analysis on the structural cracks in the small wooden bridge that connects to Coquitlam through an industrial area of Braid Street. Once that’s completed, they’ll make a decision.

“If we can get repairs done, we would anticipate that would be a two to three week process. If it’s something where we need to bring in another temporary bridge, we might be looking as long as four weeks to get that in place,” says Cote.

The bridge was also closed last year for similar structural problems.

Meanwhile, the two cities can’t seem to agree on what to do about the aging, one-lane crossing built in 1994.

The issue has gone to provincial arbitration and both sides are awaiting a decision. Coquitlam wants to expand the bridge, but New West says the industrial area on the other side with several rail crossings would get too congested by increased traffic.
