Watts not ruling out changing stance on lanes for Pattullo

SURREY (NEWS1130) – As New Westminster campaigns for a new four-lane Pattullo Bridge, the mayor of Surrey isn’t ruling out a change of heart about her push for a six-lane span.

Dianne Watts says looking at the regional system as a whole could mean a different stance. She feels right now, the four-lane bridge between New West and Surrey just isn’t sufficient.

She says if the City is just looking at the one piece of infrastructure, its position wouldn’t change in terms of its support for a six-lane bridge “and this has been part of the problem in terms of just looking at one piece of infrastructure at a time, as opposed to an entire system.”

Watts says if a plan is put in place for the whole system, there may be some differences.

“That is the work that we’re trying to get done in terms of ensuring that the province’s plans are integrated into the region’s plans, and so that of course has not been done yet,” she tells us.

New Westminster city councillors are visiting a number of municipalities in the Lower Mainland, pushing for a new four-lane span. Watts expects they’ll be presenting to her council sometime next week.
