What does your refrigerator say about you?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – What if you could take a peek in someone’s fridge before you go out on a date with them? What would it tell you?

Mike Lloyd is On the Offbeat, finding out from a man who offers romantic advice by analyzing refrigerators!

He’s chatting with CheckTheirFridge.com’s John Stonehill… in News1130 Morning Show anchor Reaon Ford‘s kitchen.

Mike: First off, explain to me why you do this. What’s your background?

John: You know, I was single for a long time, I didn’t get married ’til a couple of years ago and every time I went back to a girl’s place, I always checked her fridge. It just gave me this natural insight into who she was as a person. Even when I was in college and they had those little mini college fridges, even then I’d open the door. Nothing says more about who we are than what we eat and what we drink. You look into someone’s fridge and you truly get insight into their health, their lifestyle, their hobbies, their income, the kind of romantic partner they’ll be. There are a lot of fun clues.

Mike: So here’s Reaon’s fridge. Is it ripe with clues… or just a little ripe? What does it tell you?

John: Like a lot of us, I see positives and I see negatives. He’s environmentally conscious, that’s an attractive quality. He’s got SodaStream and that’s a brand that’s all about saving plastic bottles. My background is in marketing and sales and every brand has a story to tell, a target demo and a media plan. When I look at certain brands, I draw these little concentric circles, saying ‘that’s a clue, that’s a clue, that’s a clue’. You build a picture. When I see SodaStream, it says to me he’s environmentally conscious. And he’s also using a Brita water filter. He’s also healthy; he’s got fruit, he’s got veggies, he’s got Activia yogurt. Now, my whole joke about Activia yogurt — and there’s some truth to it — is it’s not something I’d put front and centre because Activia yogurt is about being regular and to me it’s really not sexy for people to think about how often you’re doing your business. Put it in the back.

Mike: Alighty! And there’s not a lot of entree potential in here. What does that tell you?

John: I’d say he’s mostly about take-out. His fridge is dominated by condiments. This guy’s probably busy with his career. The thing that’s also interesting here is he has a separate beer fridge. This is something I love to see because it says he’s a good host. If you have more than one beer brand, it says to me you’re caring about other people’s tastes. He’s probably the kind of guy who has buddies over to watch a game, to hang out. That hosting quality is great because when we date someone who doesn’t have a lot of friends, that’s a red flag. On the other side of the coin, his fridge is a mess and usually chaos in one’s fridge equals chaos in one’s life. There’s tons of schmutz on the bottom shelf. I don’t know if he’s got a maid but he should invest in one, at least once a month, because this fridge has things growing in it.

Mike: So overall, what’s your conclusion?

John: Overall, he’s a guy’s guy and guy’s guys are likeable dudes. He’s the kind of guy who, I think, is still a bit of a kid at heart. The most prominent thing in his fridge is chocolate syrup to make chocolate milk so the reality is I think this guy is still a bit of a kid inside and I think that’s why his fridge is a mess and he needs to clean up after himself a little better but he is a guy’s guy. That’s one of those archetypes of men who are fun to hang out with, and for girls, he may not be the art of sophistication. But he’s definitely a fun and likeable dude and I think overall it’s positive.
