Langley council nixes Brookswood development

By

LANGLEY (NEWS1130) – People in the lush, rural Brookswood area of Langley won’t see their neighbourhood turning into a concrete jungle after a decision by Langley council Monday night.

It was indeed a packed house for the meeting with Mayor Jack Froese needing to quiet the crowd a number of times.

Right off the top you could tell the plan likely wouldn’t pass as it stood, after Councillor Charlie Fox immediately introduced a motion to defer it back to staff.

He also called for more public input.

Others jumped on board or called for its all-out cancellation, eliciting applause.

In the end, it seemed the majority of people, like Gord, got what they wanted.

“I am very pleasantly surprised, yes,” he says, before explaining his stance on the broader subject of development on any level.

“There are high-density areas around the city, that if people want to move to those areas, that’s what they’re there for. The rural areas, where people enjoy the lifestyle that we’ve all become accustomed to, should remain as is.”

In the end, council voted against adopting the new community plan which would lead to high-density development.

That’s just fine with Terry.

“I’m relieved for now, we’ll see what happens in a couple years,” he says, explaining why.

“Leave the property alone. It’s a very nice area, it has a lot of trees, it’s our homes.”

Others like Robert, shared that enthusiasm but for different reasons.

“I don’t think people are afraid of development, I just think they didn’t like the plan.”

Many councillors also stated publicly that they wanted to avoid the mistakes made in the development of the Willoughby area.
