Say goodbye to Safeway Club Cards

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Say goodbye to your Safeway Club Card, it will be discontinued tomorrow.

The company says it is doing it for customer convenience, but a consumer expert disagrees.

Mary D’Astolfo with Safeway Canada says it means all shoppers will receive sales prices without providing a card or a phone number.

“There are just too many cards in the wallet these days so there isn’t going to be a card needed and there is going to be an additional 15,000 items available this week. This way everybody is able to get those saving every day without having to have a card.”

But Lindsey Meredith with SFU says it costs a ton of money to run loyalty programs like these.

“It represents a saving now to the Safeway coffers, just in terms of operational overhead. It should however, if you have no loyalty system in either Sobey’s or Safeway…let the Safeway guys defect to Safeway or visa-versa who cares! The same company owns both operations.”

Sobey’s snapped up Safeway in June. Meredith warns it could push customers to join other places that still offer loyalty programs.

“If you don’t have a loyalty points system with one store like Safeway, you don’t have to maintain it in Sobey’s either. In a way, this gets rid of potential price competition.”
