Local police take part in global campaign for awareness of sex crimes on transit

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Transit Police are getting involved in a transatlantic operation to crack down on sex crimes on our system.

“Project Global Guardian” involves forces from London, Boston and Washington, DC. The goal of the awareness campaign is to get more victims to come forward.

“[We want to] create an environment on public transportation networks around the world which does not tolerate either intimidation or sexual harassment. We hope to get out a message of awareness about the problem that it is a very under-reported offence,” says Anne Drennan with Transit Police.

She says they can learn a lot from police forces in cities with larger and older transit systems, which have had a lot more experience with these types of crimes.

“By sharing the different ways in which investigations are conducted, we hope that we’ll raise our level of ability,” she tells us.

The campaign is also using social media to get the message out.

“To raise awareness… and to encourage people to report incidents that have happened to them or that they’ve witnessed on the transportation system,” says Drennan.

The campaign is using the hashtag #GlobalGuardian
