Canucks buried by Avalanche

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Paul Stastny scored twice and Tyson Barrie had the winner with 7:30 to play in the third period as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-2 at Rogers Arena.

The Canucks were playing their first game since being officially eliminated from playoff contention, resulting in the firing of Mike Gillis and the hiring of Trevor Linden as President of Hockey Operations.

Vancouver got on the board first with a rare Henrik Sedin tally. The Canucks captain deflected home a Dan Hamhuis point shot for his 11th goal of the season, but just his second in the past 33 games.

Colorado tied the game with a little over a minute to play in the first period. Nicklas Jensen turned the puck over at the Avalanche blueline, resulting in a Paul Stastny breakaway, and he fired one through the pads of Jacob Markstrom.

After a goalless second period, Colorado went ahead early in the third when Stastny buried a rebound for his second of the night.

It took Vancouver just 99 seconds to tie the game back up. David Booth took a puck off the end boards and fired one up and over the shoulder of Semyon Varlamov for his ninth goal of the season.

Barrie scored the winner on a two-on-one rush. The blueliner kept the puck himself, toe-dragged, and then snapped a shot past Markstrom. John Mitchell added an insurance goal into the empty net to round out the scoring.

Markstrom made his first start for Vancouver since being acquired in the Roberto Luongo trade. He made 24 saves in the loss.

The Canucks have just two games remaining in the regular season, as they visit the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday and then host the Calgary Flames on Sunday.
